Energy at depth
Near-infrared light penetrates past the skin into working muscle, where it is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase. The literature links this to a short-term lift in ATP — the energy currency a muscle spends to contract — making deep NIR the band of choice for output and endurance.
Pre-exercise priming
Some of the strongest performance evidence is for light applied before exertion. In meta-analyses, near-infrared photobiomodulation given pre-exercise is associated with higher muscular output and delayed fatigue — priming the tissue rather than only repairing it afterwards.

Output is limited by how much oxygen and fuel reach working muscle. Prime before effort
On the target muscle group before training or competition, 8–15 minutes is the better-documented timing for delaying fatigue and supporting output.

The effect is a measurable but modest edge, built on adequate dose and good timing — a complement to training, nutrition and recovery rather than a substitute for them.
