Almost every light-therapy device sells two red wavelengths and a big number. The sun is a full spectrum — UV through deep infrared. Here's what “full-spectrum” really means, why it matters, and the honest truth about UV, vitamin D and the European winter.

What is full-spectrum light therapy?

Full-spectrum light therapy delivers the whole daylight signal indoors — ultraviolet, visible and infrared — instead of only the red and near-infrared wavelengths most panels emit. It aims to reproduce the light environment your biology evolved under, not a single slice of it. REDelios ONE spans 297–1280 nm across ten wavelengths.

Does red light therapy give you vitamin D?

No — and any honest maker will tell you so. Vitamin D is made in the skin by ultraviolet-B (around 290–315 nm), not by red or near-infrared light. That is exactly why a true full-spectrum device adds a measured UVB band: red light alone cannot do it, but the sun does both — and so should an indoor sun.

Can you make vitamin D from the sun in a European winter?

Mostly no. Above roughly 37° latitude — which is all of Central and Northern Europe — the winter sun sits too low for UVB to reach the ground, from about October to March. For a third of the year, even going outside won't make vitamin D. That seasonal gap is the reason full-spectrum indoor light exists.

What does “full spectrum” actually mean?

It means covering the daylight range, not a couple of points on it. REDelios ONE spans 297–1280 nm — a measured UVB band, UVA, violet, red and near-infrared, across ten wavelengths and three circadian modes. Most panels deliver two to six red/NIR wavelengths; full spectrum is a different category, not a bigger number.

Full-spectrum vs a red-and-near-infrared-only panel — what's the difference?

A red/NIR panel targets skin and recovery through two well-studied wavelengths. A full-spectrum system adds the UV and circadian bands red-only panels skip — the parts that shape your body clock, mood and the vitamin-D wavelength. If you only want red and NIR, a focused panel is fine. If you want to copy a day of sun, you need the whole spectrum.
