UV, Full Spectrum & Vitamin D
No. Red and near-infrared light cannot make vitamin D — your skin only produces it from UVB at around 297nm, a band ordinary red panels do not emit. This is the clearest proof that red light is not sunlight. A true full-spectrum device like REDelios ONE adds a measured 297nm UVB band precisely to close that gap.
Because UV is harder and costlier to do safely, so the industry skips it and ships roughly half of the sun's signal — the warm red/NIR back end only. We took the opposite path: if you want to copy the sun indoors, you cannot quietly delete the band that makes vitamin D and the UVA that mobilises nitric oxide.
Mostly, they don't. Above roughly 35°N — which is nearly all of Europe — the autumn-to-spring sun sits too low for enough UVB to reach the ground, so the skin makes little to no vitamin D outdoors for months. That winter UVB gap is exactly the problem a full-spectrum indoor sun is built to address.
Breadth of signal. A typical red light panel emits two to six wavelengths, all bunched above 600nm — the warm slice of the sun. Yes, when used as designed: the UV is low-dose, time-limited and delivered through a guided protocol — never to tan or burn. Sunlight's UV is only harmful in excess; brief, well-timed exposure is how humans evolved to make vitamin D. The device meters UV the way a short morning sun does, not a midday beach.
UVB is ultraviolet light around 280–315nm — the highest-energy band that reaches the ground. Its signature job in the body is making vitamin D: UVB at roughly 297nm converts a cholesterol precursor in your skin into vitamin D3. It's also the band winter sun is too low to deliver and ordinary window glass filters out.
UVA is longer-wavelength ultraviolet around 315–400nm. Beyond tanning, research associates UVA with releasing nitric oxide stored in the skin, which relaxes blood vessels and is linked to lower blood pressure and better circulation. It penetrates deeper than UVB and is a real part of the daylight signal red-only panels skip entirely.
No. Ordinary glass blocks almost all UVB — the only band that makes vitamin D — while letting longer UVA and visible light through. So sitting in a sunny window, in a car, or in a conservatory feels warm and bright but produces essentially no vitamin D. This is another reason indoor life leaves the body UV-starved.
No — they're three different tools. A red light panel delivers red/NIR for skin and recovery; a SAD lamp delivers bright blue-white light for circadian timing and mood; a vitamin-D lamp emits UVB. Each touches one job. A full-spectrum device is the only format that addresses all three at once, because it carries all those bands.
Think complement, not replacement. Skin-made vitamin D from UVB is how the body evolved to get it, and a full-spectrum device can support that pathway in sunless months. But supplements remain a reliable backstop, especially through deep winter or for people who get little exposure. We position full-spectrum light alongside, not instead of, sensible supplementation.

Dosing, Distance & Use
Around 15–30cm for most full-body red/NIR sessions, but the exact distance depends on the device's measured irradiance. Closer isn't automatically better — it just delivers the dose faster, and overshooting the optimal dose can blunt the effect. Use the published irradiance at your distance, then let our dose calculator convert it into a session length.
A joule per square centimetre (J/cm²) is the light dose your skin receives — irradiance (power) multiplied by time. Most red/NIR studies land in a broad few-J/cm² to tens-of-J/cm² range depending on goal and depth. Rather than memorise numbers, enter your device and distance into our dose calculator and it does the maths.
mW/cm² is irradiance — how much light power lands on each square centimetre of skin. It's the number that actually determines your dose. Quoted at the LED surface it's meaningless marketing, because light spreads fast with distance. Always ask for irradiance measured at your real treatment distance (15–30cm); without it you can't calculate a dose.
Because photobiomodulation is biphasic: there's an optimal dose that stimulates cells, and going past it can stall or reverse the benefit. More power or longer sessions don't keep adding effect — they can subtract it. This "Goldilocks" curve is one of the best-established facts in the field, and it's why we built a dose calculator instead of saying "more is better."
Typically about 5–20 minutes per area for red/NIR, set by your device's irradiance and distance rather than a fixed clock. Consistency matters more than marathon sessions — a short daily dose compounds the way regular morning sun does, while one very long blast can simply overshoot the effective range.

Because the dose response is biphasic, "too much" tends to waste the benefit rather than cause harm. No — cleanse first. Makeup, sunscreen and heavy creams can block or scatter light at the skin surface, and sunscreen is specifically designed to absorb part of the spectrum. Go in with clean, bare skin so the dose reaches you, then apply serums or moisturiser after the session.
Over fully healed skin, generally yes. The caution is that dark tattoo ink absorbs more light and can warm up, so over large or very dark tattoos keep sessions shorter and watch for heat. Never use it on fresh or healing tattoos. If in doubt, treat around the area or ask your artist.
Either, depending on your goal — and full-spectrum timing matters more than for red-only. Bright daytime light supports alertness and sets your clock; gentle, warm evening light suits wind-down. Safety & Contraindications
Most healthy adults can use it, but check with a professional first if you're pregnant, have active cancer in the treatment area, take photosensitising medication, have photosensitive epilepsy, or manage a thyroid or autoimmune condition. This isn't a warning that it's dangerous — it's that these situations need individual judgement we can't give online.
Side effects are uncommon and mild. The most reported are temporary skin redness, warmth, mild eye strain if you skip eyewear, or an occasional light headache — typically clearing within an hour. It's a non-ionising, low-risk modality. Starting with shorter sessions and using eye protection keeps even these minor effects rare.
Red and near-infrared light is gentle to the eyes — unlike blue light, it carries low photochemical retinal hazard, and research even studies red wavelengths for retinal health. Still, bright LEDs are uncomfortable to stare into, so wear the supplied eyewear and don't look directly at the array. For any device with UV, eye protection is essential.
Red and near-infrared light is non-ionising and is not associated with the DNA damage that drives skin cancer — fundamentally different from tanning-bed UV. In a true full-spectrum device, the only UV present is kept low-dose and time-limited by protocol, far from burning or tanning levels. Used as directed, the safety profile is reassuring.

Children's skin and eyes are more sensitive, and dosing isn't established for them, so any use with a child should be supervised and cleared with a paediatric professional first. There's no known mechanism by which red or near-infrared light would interfere with a pacemaker or implant — light is non-ionising and doesn't generate the electromagnetic interference these devices guard against. Even so, if you have any implanted device, we'd still suggest a quick check with your cardiologist before starting, for peace of mind.
Follow your practitioner's guidance — they know your skin's state. In general, wait until the skin has settled, then start gentle and short. Red light is studied to support skin repair, which is why some clinics use it post-procedure, but timing after peels, injectables or laser work should be set by the professional who did it.
Yes, with simple sequencing: do your light session on clean, bare skin first, then apply retinoids or exfoliating acids afterwards. Light reaches the skin best without product in the way, and your actives absorb better onto freshly treated skin. If your skin is irritated from strong actives, ease off and go gentle.
Red light does not meaningfully suppress melatonin. Blue Light & Eyewear
For evening sleep timing, yes — blocking blue and green light at night protects the wind-down the sun used to give you, because that's the band that suppresses melatonin. For daytime eye strain the evidence is weaker. The honest rule that follows: yellow by day, red at night.
Lens colour decides what's blocked, which decides when to wear them. Yellow/amber lenses cut most of the blue band — good for daytime screen comfort and early evening. Deep-red lenses cut blue and green, the fullest evening wind-down. Same daily rhythm, two ends: yellow by day, red at night.
Wear yellow/amber during the day for screen comfort, or in the early evening if your screens are dim. Switch to deep red roughly 2–3 hours before bed, when protecting melatonin matters most. Think of red glasses as the evening counterpart to getting bright light in the morning.
Because the melatonin-relevant signal extends past blue into green, and only the deeper red lens removes green too — so it protects the dark half of your day most completely. Amber is enough for daytime comfort; deep red is the choice for the last hours before sleep.
No. Deep-red lenses give a strong red cast and distort colour, so they're for the last hours at home before bed — not for driving or any task where colour or contrast matters. Yellow/amber lenses are far lighter and fine for daytime indoor wear.
Daytime amber lenses may feel more comfortable for some people, but comfort isn't a proven medical effect, and much screen strain comes from blink rate, distance and breaks rather than blue light itself. The clearest evidence is for evening sleep timing. Use the 20-20-20 habit for strain first.

Software night-modes help but are incomplete — they shift the screen, not the room, and don't cover ceiling lights, lamps or other devices. Glasses block short-wavelength light right at the eye, whatever the source. Use night mode and warm dim rooms as well; the glasses close the gap.
Worn in the last hours before bed, blue-blocking eyewear can support healthy sleep timing for older children and teens, the same way it does for adults. Supervise use, keep daytime light bright, and treat it as a sleep-hygiene aid, not a fix for a sleep disorder.

Get bright light early — ideally daylight outdoors soon after waking — to set your body clock for the day, then keep evenings dim and warm. Timed bright light is what strongly resets the human clock, which is why morning brightness and evening darkness work as a pair.
Indirectly, yes. Red light sits far from the blue band that suppresses melatonin, so a dim, warm, red-lit evening doesn't fight your wind-down the way blue-heavy lighting does. It supports a calm pre-sleep environment — it's not a sedative, and good light timing across the whole day matters most.
Bright morning light sets your internal clock, which schedules when melatonin is released that evening — so a well-anchored morning is what lets sleep arrive on time at night. Light timing entrains the master clock; the morning and the night are two ends of one rhythm.

Near-infrared light penetrates deeper than red, so it can reach joints and support comfort and mobility. A Lancet meta-analysis found low-level laser therapy reduced acute and chronic neck pain versus placebo — one of the field's strongest results — though we describe support, not a cure.
Both are reasonable. Many people use light before training to prime the muscle and after to support recovery — the research covers performance and repair around exercise. Specific red wavelengths have real evidence: a randomised trial found a 655nm device increased hair count about 39% versus sham in androgenetic alopecia. It depends on ongoing, consistent use, and results vary. We're transparent — we don't sell a dedicated hair device, so judge it on that evidence, not our marketing.
Honestly, the evidence here is weak, and we don't position any product for fat loss. There's early mechanistic work on light, mitochondria and glucose metabolism, but that's a lab signal, not proof a panel slims you down. Be sceptical of any device sold as a fat-loss shortcut, including ours.
It's associated with a calmer local environment. Photobiomodulation can lower reactive-oxygen stress in already-stressed cells and modulate inflammatory signalling, which supports comfort — but it's a supportive input, not an anti-inflammatory drug, and effects are dose-dependent. We describe support and association, never treatment of an inflammatory disease.
Red/NIR light supports collagen and firmness over time, so some people see a smoother, firmer look — but we're cautious here, because body-contouring and cellulite claims are routinely overstated across the industry. Expect gradual firmness support, not contouring or fat removal, and give it months, not days.
Timed bright daytime light supports mood and energy through your circadian system — that's well grounded, and it's the principle behind morning light and full-spectrum indoor light in dark winters. A narrow red-only panel isn't the tool for this; breadth and timing of daytime light are what matter.

Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation, is the use of specific red and near-infrared wavelengths (roughly 630–850nm) to support the body. The light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in your mitochondria, supporting cellular energy (ATP) production. It's well-studied for skin, wound healing and recovery — and it's one real band of the sun's much wider spectrum.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the scientific term for what's popularly called red light therapy: using non-thermal red and near-infrared light to influence cell function rather than to heat or cut tissue. It replaced the older term "low-level laser therapy" because the effect comes from the light's wavelength and dose, not from a laser specifically.
